Researching Mercenaries

Just discovered researchers for Mercenaries. It appears that once I have hired one of the researchable mercs I can’t then research it to higher version. Wondering if there is a way around that. And really don’t understand why it is set up that way.
I guess I should have somehow known not to hire mercs being clairvoyant and all.

You mean the mercenary researcher in Splendor, right? You have to research the mercenaries in order. It will take you about 2 full months to get all of them.

Ty Cusashorn! it was unclear as when I was looking at the mercs there the fine print said something to the effect that since i hired the merc I couldn’t research

Mouse over each merc, and it will tell you that you will have to sign the contract before you can research the next merc.
