- How do I become a crafter? Hail the NPC behind the counter in the tower cellar while on the island, or hail the crafting trainer outside any suburb (Baubbleshire, etc.) crafting instance to be set to Artisan level 2, and be granted your Artisan Essentials Volume 2 book.
- Can I do the tradeskill tutorial while on the islands? No, though you can craft there if you can get books shipped over.
- Where do I craft in Qeynos/Freeport? Each suburb (Scale Yard, Nettleville, etc.) has a Crafting Trainer standing just outside a cellar entrance. Those cellars are the crafting areas. The Crafting Trainer will sell your level 2-9 tradeskill books when you are just starting out.
- Where do I go for Seeking a Tradeskill Profession? The NPC (tradeskill delegate) you need for that is a) at the top of the stairs in the suburb crafting instances for Qeynos crafters and b) in next to a chemistry table on the first floor of the suburb crafting instances for Freeport.
- How do I get to level 10 and level 20 crafter? You must certify your subclass at 9 to get to level 10. Then certify your class at 19 to get to level 20. (No need to complete level 9 or level 19, just go hail.) In Qeynos, you are looking for Alfred Ironforge in the construction area of the Qeynos Harbor Docks. In Freeport, you are looking for Alethea Augustine on the second floor of the Coalition of Tradesfolke in West Freeport.
- Where do I get my level 10+ books? Once you have certified your level 10 crafting choice, go back to the suburbs and the crafting trainer will have your 10-19 books. Level 20+ books come after you certify at 20. Level 30 books unlock after you hit level 30, etc.
- Are there crafting quests other than the tutorial? Work orders and Rush orders have been added for level 20+ crafters. Right now, some of them reward you more than vendor sell-back price and some do not. All are supposed to grant you more than vendor sell-back (in addition to the xp and status, etc.). If you run into one that rewards less than a vendor would pay you for the items that you made, you need to be sure that specific writ (name and rush/work order status) is posted in the Bug forum so that it can be fixed.
- What is going on with my reaction arts? You get 3 +progress reaction arts as a basic artisan. When you hit level 10 in your subclass, you get a set of 3 +durability arts to go along with them, but only for your subclass. (Outfitters get tailor, armorer and weaponsmith arts only, for example). When you hit 20 in your profession, you get 3 new profession-only +progress arts.
- I deleted/didn't get/the dog ate my crafting tutorial quest. Help! A fix was slipped in so you can now gain/regain the Seeking a Profession quest at whatever stage you left it at. Examine the scroll that offered the quest to be granted the proper quest. If you threw out or did not get the scroll, the delegate who handles the quest progression (mentioned in the 4th bullet point above) sells copies of the scroll.
- Can I reset my tradeskill profession once I've already chosen my level 10 subclass? No, that came at a later time in the game's history.
- What about these _____ _____ pelts that keep dropping from fur-bearing mobs? The sullied low quality wolf pelts and so on? They can be used in place of harvested leather of the same tier as the mob. So a level 9 bear would drop leather that can replace a rawhide leather pelt, etc. Depending on prices at the time, it may be worth it to save them for your crafting, or to vendor them to help pay for your crafting.
- What is "liquid" in terms of crafting? This is where old jokes about gnoll spit tea and such come from. Aerated mineral water on the wholesaler merchant is the "standard" liquid for use in cooking, but various dropped ____ saliva work as well. Ewwww. (Watch the prices, as they may sell back for more than the aerated mineral water costs you.)
- What skill do I need to harvest rares in ____ tier? There is no skill requirement for harvesting rares in tier 1. Tier 2 requires 20. Tier 3 zones require a harvesting skill of 90, Tier 4 zones require a skill of 140, Tier 5 zones a skill of 190. If you are below the required skill, and would have received the coveted 10 common +1 rare event, instead you will just receive 10 of the common resources. While examining the nodes to see the harvesting level requirement works properly on the live servers, it does not give the proper response on Origins because that feature came later in the game, making the nodes ... confused.
- Are there items to improve my crafting skills? Other than the quested Artisan's Tunic from the tutorial, there are a very few high-end items, but they require a high (47-48) adventuring level as well. Girdle of the Master Armorer (+4 metal shaping, from Nek 2), Unargin's Smithy Hammer (21.2 Metal Shaping and Metal Working, from Nek 2) and Crana's Brittle Wand (+4 Chemistry) are confirmed so far on Origins.
Other info from the community:
- There is no Artisan Essentials Volume 1.
- The Artisan Essentials Volume 2 book has recipes that are above level 2. You can make them while you're level 2 to get a larger increase in XP.
- You may need to make additional items during each stage of the crafting quest (especially if you have no vitality) to be able to scribe the book you just got that has the recipe you need to make for the quest.
- You do get first made XP but only with a pristine combine
- Tip: You only need to get to level 9 and do not need to fill the bar to go and talk to the person to advance to 10 (same with 19 to get to 20).
- At level 20, you receive upgraded crafting reaction arts to replace the ones you received at artisan 2. However, they do not/will not replace them in the crafting interface, and your skillups will be less because you're not using high level reaction arts. Create a regular hot bar with the crafting reactions you want. When you start a craft, click on something outside the craft window like a bag. This usually won't let you use your reactions on the crafting window since it's not your main window anymore. Then you can use the buttons on your hotbar that you have set up to craft to your delight.
- Food rares (and advanced provisioner books) did not exist during this era.
