Sup peeps, I have not played this game since like 07 and kind of looking for something chill to play to kill some time. I thought EQ would be another game to incorporate, but how is the player base? I see theres multiple servers but Im not sure which one I should start fresh on. Also I dont mind the subscription if I find myself enjoying the game again in 2025 but well see how that goes lol. Much appreciated for the responses!

If you don't mind subscription there's a lot of people playing on Origins region of the game. On patcher ( please download game patcher from Everquest II website and do not go through Steam) select Version: Origin in upper left corner, there is somewhere a field there to do full download, not just streaming bits and pieces. Enjoy the game as you probably remember it.

Regular version of the game as in US English, or EU English is what we call Live, allows free play, but paying subscription has its perks and bonuses.
Be prepared for inflation, max level of 130, soon to go to 135 and generally a ton of new mechanics and content that can be overwhelming at first.

Lots of friendly people no matter which version you choose.

On Live, the game is easy mode, and basically dead, from level 1 to current expac. Origins seems to have a lot of players, but the server is now top heavy, just like Varsoon or any server, really.

Best tip I can give is find a guild with the type of players you like to be around and enjoy the game for what it is in 2025.

Second tip is to make heavy use of the wiki for some content and realize that, since it's player supported, much of the information will not be an exact fit of what you find today since a lot of the information on there is a decade or more too old. Still, it's the best way to get reacquainted with EQ2 and make sense of the changes since you last played.

Bookmark the EverQuest 2 Wiki. Even the game's loading tips recommends using it.

There's no low level population for almost anywhere outside of Origins anymore. The game has become very solo friendly (in fact, it's required for all of the 100+ content just to unlock the heroics), and Mercenary NPCs are intentionally overpowered up until you hit level 100.

At level 100, you have to go to the Plane of Magic and complete the questline, as grinding will no longer be possible. The XP requirement to reach level 101 jumped so exponentially in that expansion, that grinding would literally take a few years just to get one level.

Man that sounds very interesting lol! yeah the game definitely feels a little new with the xpacs. Plane of magic I would assume is an expansion content? and yeah a year for one level is something im not trying to do so that questline tip is going to come in HANDY! Appreciate the feedback wholeheartedly

I find servers Skyfire and MajDul to have nice, friendly players.

If you want to enjoy the quests and roll through old content, the live servers are nice, just grab a mercenary from town to help with combat for your solo play.

There's three daily tradeskill quests from an NPC in the tradeskill buildings in the Major cities, where if you do the quests given daily, you can easily level up your tradeskills and avoid a laborious grind.

Shinies collections make me great money and are fun to collect. You will be a millionaire in no time!

If you come to Skyfire, say hi to Tibbie, Gertie, or Averra. I will hook you up with bags, mount, and some plats. :)

Make a gnome. We have more fun, are adorable, have superior intellect, and are plotting world domination of our lesser peers....Oh wait! Did I say that out loud?! I meant, we are having deep, private, gnomish dialogue at our awesome gnome parties discussing our trademarked tinkered explosive devices. A'hem!

You said you left in 2007, which was when Echoes of Faydwer added Kelethin and Neriak as starting cities, and the Fay and Arasai as playable races. In 2009 or so, we would get the Freeblood vampires as a playable race, and the Aerakyn in 2013. The Ratonga stopped being an evil-only race in 2012, and there's a small storyline to explain why. The Vah Shir were added with the Reign of Shadows expansion in 2021.

I suggest looking up the expansions and adventure packs page on Wiki to see the full release timeline of each expansion. If you want to go through and experience all the content for yourself, you can do it in a specific order that way. Things get muddy in the level 90 range when multiple expansions and mid-year content storylines were added, so you want to be sure which to start first without doing the story out of order.

The Altar of Malice expansion increased the level cap from 95 to 100, and then Terror of Thalumbra and Kunark Ascending kept the level at 100 before the Planes of Prophecy increased it to 110. Thats when players had to start questing to level up, as I previously mentioned.

Ever since then, a formula was followed that level increases would only happen every other expansion. Blood of Luclin in 2020 increases from 110 to 120. Visions of Vetrovia in 2022 increased to 125. Ballad of Zimara in 2024 increased to 130, and now the Rage of Cthurath will increase to 135.

There's a lot of new mechanics that can become overwhelming that you'll have to learn, but take it slow.
